Improving Menopause Care for Veterans
Please add your support for H.R. 219, the Improving Menopause Care for Veterans Act. This bill would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a comprehensive study on the menopause care provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Menopause has been shown to raise the risk for depression twofold and corresponds to the highest rates of suicide among U.S. women. However, as detailed in DAVโs latest report, Women Veterans: The Journey to Mental Wellness, the impact of menopause on mental health and suicide risk among women veterans is understudied and not well defined. Therefore, it is crucial that the physical and mental health care needs of our women veterans experiencing menopause and perimenopause are adequately being addressed.
H.R. 219 would direct GAO to focus on services for women veterans enrolled in VA care who are experiencing symptoms associated with the transition phases of menopause to include perimenopause, genitourinary syndrome of menopause and post-menopause.
This legislation is consistent with DAV Resolution No. 32, which calls for research on menopause and its impact on mental health and the overall well-being of women veterans.
Please use the prepared email or your own letter and urge your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 219, the Improving Menopause Care for Veterans Act. Thank you for your support of DAVโs legislative priorities.
