A message from CISA
Avoid Scams After Disaster Strikes
As hurricanes and other natural disasters occur, CISA urges individuals to remain on alert for potential malicious cyber activity. Fraudulent emails and social media messages—often containing malicious links or attachments—are common after major natural disasters. Exercise caution in handling emails with hurricane-related subject lines, attachments, or hyperlinks. In addition, be wary of social media pleas, texts, or door-to-door solicitations relating to severe weather events. Before responding, ensure hurricane-related guidance is from trusted sources, such as local officials and disaster response organizations, including Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and DHS's Ready.gov.
CISA encourages users to review the following resources to avoid falling victim to malicious cyber activity:
Federal Trade Commission’s Staying Alert to Disaster-related Scams and Before Giving to a Charity,
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Frauds and Scams,
FEMA's Disaster Fraud guidance, and
CISA’s Phishing Guidance, Stopping the Attack Cycle at Phase One to help organizations reduce likelihood and impact of successful phishing attacks.

A message from the VA
First 10,000 individuals to Take the Pledge to check-in with 10 Veterans during VA’s Buddy Check Week receive $10 Starbucks gift card
At Face the Fight, we are dedicated to supporting Veterans and addressing the critical issue of Veteran suicide. This year, we are proud to collaborate with Starbucks to amplify VA’s Buddy Check Week, Oct. 21–25, 2024.
This initiative is crucial for raising awareness about mental health and providing essential support to Veterans, service members, their families, caregivers and survivors. Military and Veteran caregivers, who are championed by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation—a key strategic partner in Face the Fight’s coalition-building efforts—play a vital role in this mission, as they are often the first line of support for Veterans facing mental health challenges. Together with Starbucks, we’re hoping to make a significant impact in encouraging valuable peer-to-peer connections through:
Gift Card Donation: Starbucks is donating $10 gift cards to Face the Fight, which will be given to the first 10,000 individuals who Take the Pledge to check-in with 10 Veterans during VA’s Buddy Check Week. Gift cards will be sent via email on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will be distributed by early November.
Training Support: Take the free “Face the Fight: Basics of Veteran Suicide Prevention” training. This training equips participants with the skills to support Veterans in need, ensuring that more people are prepared to make a meaningful difference.
“We believe in the power of human connection and always aim to contribute positively to the communities we serve, and in support of these beliefs are honored to collaborate with Face the Fight in this important initiative,” said Leslie Jones, Veteran and Military Engagement at Starbucks. “By working together, we can help create a supportive environment for our Veterans, their families and those who care for them.”
We need your help in this vital mission. Please take the free Face the Fight training and be prepared to support a Veteran in need. Your participation can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
Together, we will create a strong, connected community for all those who have served our country and those who support them.

A message from Tallahassee Veterans Legal Collaborative
Thursday’s Legal Clinic included a team of 17 of us, including 6 attys and 2 law students, assisting 15 Veterans plus family members (we need more attorneys volunteering at the clinic, since referrals to other offices are not easy and delay Veterans’ getting answers and the expertise they need.) Margaret led our clinic team in “coining” Khalid Shafi, for his months of volunteering with the Food Delivery team and critical administrative work at the computer/case co-ordination tables. Grats, Khalid and thanks again.

The Veterans Treatment Ct is still needing additional Veteran Mentors for Veterans entangled in the criminal justice system. Veterans who are Attorneys and non-attys, please inquire! If you want to observe, come to the next Court session is Friday, Oct 18 at 3 pm in the Leon County Cthouse, Courtroom 2E. There will also be a Training for new Mentors at 6 pm on Tuesday, Oct 29, at the Thomasville Rd Courthouse Annex.
Kudos to Wednesday’s Farm Share Food Delivery volunteers Leonard Barrington and Khalid Shafi, joined by Exit Smith ! Thanks for the use of the truck & trailer, Emily!
More Vets called in again this week or responded online from around the state, and we instructed them to come to Thursday Clinics or, if outside Leon or the State, to look for local Veteran services. Thanks to FSU Law student Rafael Alcolea, John Linney and Susie C. for helping respond (Veterans in prison, NW Fl, etc.)
What else?
