Greetings, team
Thursday’s Legal Clinic again featured several Veterans volunteering, even though their court-ordered community service requirements have already been completed! (Charles, Shane, Khalid, Chris). In all, our Legal Clinic worked with 13 Veterans and family members, plus 2 Vets by phone, at American Legion Post 13, Lk Ella. Our volunteer team totaled 18, including 5 attorneys. Khalid, Kathy, Valerie & Margaret volunteered with Susie for the admin support today (front desk and computer records table). We answered various legal questions (housing, civil, Driver’s licenses, auto insurance, Veteran benefits, etc.) and made referrals to specialists in supportive law firms around town and around the state and in Georgia. Kudos this week to Khalid Shafi, Charles Robinson, Chris Bodiford, Gregory Howard, Eddie McMillian and Tanya Riley for the food distribution trip Wednesday, including to Vet Village and Homefront. Today on behalf of the TVLC team, Susie coined longtime Volunteer Valerie Colson for her admin help at clinics over the last year (see photo)
THIS MONDAY featured Graduation Ceremonies at the Leon County Veterans Treatment Court, where three Army Veterans (Terrance Lee, Tameka Colon, and Reginald Walker) successfully were honored by Judge LaShawn Riggins, Keynote Judge Lance E Neff, and celebrated by the entire Courtroom and team. In addition, Khalid Shafi was specially recognized for a FDVA/FVF Medallion presented by longtime lobbyist and leader in the Florida Dept of Veteran Affairs, Roy Clark. As has become custom, our Tallahassee graduates were fortunate to also receive FDVA/FVF Medallions. See photo, Khalid and his medallion, addressing the Veterans in the program.
Also Monday morning, American Legion Post 13 Commander Dennis Hall was interviewed on the Greg Tish radio show and gave kudos to TVLC for our weekly clinics over the past 8 years, and announced the upcoming Poker Run. Thanks, Sir!
Speaking of which, plans progress in organizing for the Poker Run here to benefit the Tallahassee Civic Chorale, who are sharing the proceeds with TVLC. Save the date: Saturday, October 18. Let us know if you can join in, helping us host the several stops for the Riders that day!
Last month’s fundraiser at the Community Co-op raised us some $700 and we appreciate all who “rounded up” their purchases for TVLC during July.
This will help TVLC continue to help with Driver’s License Reinstatements, as well as gas money for the weekly food distribution. Volunteer Veterans pick up the food in Quincy and deliver to Vet Village, Homefront, and other Hud Vash low-income locations where Veterans live!
What else?
Thank you,
Dan Hendrickson, for the Tallahassee Veterans Legal Collaborative
